Amakhosi failed to honour two of their five DStv Premiership fixtures in December 2021 after a wave of Covid-19 infections swept across Naturena with over 50 players and staff testing positive.

The club had initially requested a postponement of all five of their December fixtures, with the club saying they were unable to honour those matches due to the widespread infections in the team.

Kaizer Chiefs subsequently failed to honour their first two fixtures of the month against Cape Town City FC and Golden Arrows, and the lengthy legal battle will soon come to a head as the club prepares to attend a South Africa Football Association (SAFA) arbitration on Saturday, 5 March.

‘We followed the rules, we followed the law’ – Jessica Motaung

“On our side, we’re very confident. We know that we followed the rules, we followed the law, we did what was best for everybody,” Jessica Motaung told assembled journalists, as quoted by TimesLIVE.

“Obviously the case is ongoing so I can’t be discussing the details of it. But certainly, we followed the rules of the country and also we care about our players, we care about the opponents as well.

“And in very difficult situations we just have to make difficult decisions that are in the interests and to the benefit of everybody.

“This has shown us that Covid-19 put us under pressure. We ended up having a huge number of people who at the technical level, playing and management level, couldn’t even operate and manage the game.

“So we had to take a responsible position,” Motaung concluded.

Kaizer Chiefs are currently fifth in the DStv Premiership standings and will take on bottom-of-the-table Baroka FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday in their next clash.

Kick-off is scheduled for 19:30.
