IUIU Gets New Rector, as Moses Ali Replaces fallen Kiveijinja on University Council

Associate Professor, Dr. Ismail Gyegenda, the Vice-Rector in Charge of Academic Affairs of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), has been elected as the new Rector of IUIU, replacing Dr. Ahmed Kaweesa Ssengendo who had held the same position since 2003.

Dr. Ssengendo was recently appointed as the Assistant Secretary-General of Economic Affairs of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation- (OIC), replacing the fallen Ugandan ambassador in Saudi Arabia, the late Dr. Ahmad Ssenyomo who died September this year.

Gyegenda was elected by the University Council, during its 33rd Council Meeting that was held via zoom.

In the same meet, Dr. Jamil Sserwanga was elected as the new Vice Rector Academic Affairs.

While receiving the new responsibility, Gyagenda thanked the University staff, Parents, Students and the Government for tirelessly supporting the University, and pledged to use his new position and develop the institution.

“It will be foolish to think that I can compare myself with the out-going Rector, however what I can say is that it’s upon me to create my own legacy,” he noted.

His appointment comes a day, as the University prepares to graduate over 200 students in a scientific ceremony that will be held at the IUIU females Campus in Kabojja on Wednesday this week.

At IUIU, a Rector holds the same powers as the Vice Chancellor at some Universities.

Meanwhile, the Council also appointed First Deputy Prime Minister Al-haji Moses Ali as a new Council Member, replacing the fallen Second Deputy Prime Minister who the late Al-hajj Kirunda Kiveijinja, who succumbed to COVI-19 recently.

Who is Assoc. Prof. Gyagenda?

Assoc. Prof. Gyagenda held the post of vice rector academics for five years, He attended Kabwohe Muslim primary school, joined Mbarara High Secondary, St Mary’s College Kisubu, before Makerere University in 1976 where he attained Bachelor’s Degree in Literature and Islamic studies.

He later studied his Masters in Jordan, and studied Arabic Language in Mecca, Umm Al Qura University where he left to United States for 28 years upon his appointment as vice rector IUIU in 2016

Who sits on IUIU’s Council?

According to its settings, the IUIU Council has 16 members, where; five are appointed by the Government of Uganda and these include; the First Deputy Prime Minister Moses Ali, Hon Nusura Tiperu, Saida Bumba, a member from the Ministry of Education and Sports and one from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The other 11 members are appointed by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which Uganda joined in 1974 during the leadership of the president. Iddi Amin Dada.

OIC is a key funder of the Islamic university in Uganda, the first-ever Islamic university in the country.
