Itumeleng Khune wants his Kaizer Chiefs place back

Itumeleng Khune will not go gentle into that good night as he vows to fight for his place in the Kaizer Chiefs starting XI.

A succession of recent coaches have shown little faith in Khune outside of expressing support for him during press conferences.

However, Khune hasn’t given up hope of regaining the status of No 1 keeper at the Glamour Boys.

He insists that he wants to give Arthur Zwane ‘good headaches’.

“I just have to go out there and fight for the number one spot. It is not going to be easy there’s Bruce Bvuma, who is a future Bafana Bafana number one, there’s Brandon Peterson who is also knocking on the Bafana door and I’ve been there, and we keep on learning a lot from each other,” Khune told journalists at the DStv Premiership launch.

“The competition is stiff and tight so we just want to give coach Arthur [Zwane] and coach Dillon [Sheppard] a good headache because already we have played a couple of friendlies and all of us were able to share a number of minutes. Obviously, for us, we had to sit down with the goalkeeper coaches and compare our stats from three seasons ago. We have been conceding (many) goals so now its important that we concede less and keep more clean sheets and so far so good,” he said.

Khune has spent his entire senior career at Kaizer Chiefs making over 300 appearances for the club across all competitions.

A product of the Kaizer Chiefs youth system and one of that organisation’s finest products, Khune’s reluctance to leave the club has limited his involvement in recent Premiership campaigns.

He managed to get onto the pitch just once in the last season, with that effort coming in the MTN 8 quarter-final against Sundowns which Kaizer Chiefs lost on penalties.

Khune has been working hard outside of Naturena to help him earn his way back into the fold.

In a recent post on Instagram, the stopper showed himself looking in peak condition on the scale before he weighed himself. The Glamour Boys star captioned the post with “we keep pushing Ngewnya”.
