I’m sorry…Orlando Pirates won’t win the league – Ex-Chiefs star

Former Kaizer Chiefs star Junior Khanye has questioned Orlando Pirates‘ league aspirations following their 2-1 win over Chippa United on Wednesday evening.

The Buccaneers scored a late winner to secure all three points in their first Betway Premiership. Speaking to iDiski TV, Khanye was not convinced by Pirates’ play. Having gone down 1-0, Jose Riveiro‘s men had to fight to secure the win at home.

The former Kaizer Chiefs winger said Chippa allowed Orlando Pirates back into the game. “Chippa have themselves to blame,” Khanye said.

“This game should have at least ended in a draw because the game was balanced especially in the first half.”

The former footballer praised Chippa coach Kwanele Kopo and Andile Jali.

“Today(Wednesday evening), his(Kopo) team wanted to build from the back. His goalkeeper I know he’s not good at his feet but today I saw him start the build-up.”

Ex-Chiefs star praises former Orlando Pirates midfielder

“What Andile Jali did at Sundowns, he was doing it today. He fetched the ball from the box, he was bullish and arrogant on the ball. His passes were clean and hardly lost the ball. He made the team click but was let down by his front three,” Khanye said.

The former dribbling wizard said Orlando Pirates were predictable against Chippa.

“Today(Wednesday night), they were lucky to get the goal in the second half. Credit to this guy…good cross and good positioning from Monnapule Saleng to find the net by using a good technique. Either than that, this game was supposed to end in a draw,” Khanye added.

When asked about the Bucanners’ chances of winning the league, the 39-year-old analyst said Mamelodi Sundowns were still favourites.

Orlando Pirates win their opening league match.

“The thing is that if you rely on individual brilliance, it becomes easy for other teams to plan against you. It takes a team effort to win a league of CAF Champions League. Sundowns, pound for pound have the best talent and best players for each position.”

“Pirates will never compete for the league, Sundowns will retain the title,” he said.

Orlando Pirates are in action again this weekend against Jwaneng Galaxy in the second leg of the CAF Champions League second round.
