I apologise for backing Otto Addo’s return – Agyemang-Badu
Emmanuel Agyemang-BaduFormer Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has publicly apologised for backing Otto Addos second stint as the Black Stars’ head coach following the teams disappointing performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat to Sudan on Tuesday, October 15, leaving them winless after four qualifiers and in danger of missing the tournament.Speaking on Agoro Fie on Onua TV, Agyemang-Badu expressed regret for his previous support of Addos return, acknowledging that the coach may not be the right fit for the job.I apologise. Those who advocated for the second coming of coach Otto Addo, I gave him massive support but Im sorry. It seems the task is beyond him, he admitted.Otto Addo, who initially led Ghana to the 2022 World Cup but failed to progress beyond the group stage, was reappointed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) despite not meeting some of the set criteria. Since his return, Addo has struggled to inspire the Black Stars, recording only two wins, and now faces the threat of dismissal.Agyemang-Badu, a key member of Ghanas victorious 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup squad, also criticized the overall decline of the national team, suggesting that the issues have been downplayed for some time. He urged football stakeholders to go back to the drawing board and consider taking a break from major tournaments if necessary to rebuild the teams foundation.Sometimes when you talk about these things, you are tagged as a bad person, he said, adding that if the Black Stars cannot beat teams like Niger, they dont deserve to play at the AFCON.His comments come amid growing calls for significant changes within the national team setup after Ghanas underwhelming performance in the ongoing AFCON qualifiers.
