It is no longer a secret that SuperSport United midfielder Teboho Mokoena is set to be unveiled as a Mamelodi Sundowns player soon.
Sundowns are believed to have beat off competition from both Kaizer Chiefs and Anderlecht for Mokoena’s signature.
It was once Chiefs vs Sundowns
Chiefs and Sundowns were, for the longest time, believed to be the two clubs who were playing going head to head for Mokoena’s services. The lead in that race seemed to exchange hands so many times, similarly to the situation regarding another SuperSport midfielder Sipho Mbule. In fact, just like with Mbule, Mokoena had seemed to give Amakhosi encouragement by reportedly stating that he preferred a move to Naturena instead.
During this time, SuperSport were not opposed to selling Mokoena to either of Chiefs or Sundowns, but were quick to reiterate their preference to sell him abroad. This was due to the club believing that the player had a high ceiling and that his growth would be better served playing abroad. They also, obviously did not want to strengthen their DStv Premiership rivals any further, unless a seriously strong offer came from one of them.
In the end, they got two, one from Belgian giants Anderlecht which would’ve presented SuperSport with their ideal selling scenario. The other came in the form of Sundowns, who unlike Chiefs, were able to put their money where their mouth is, and eventually win the race for Mokoena’s signature.
Mokoena’s agreement with Masandawana confirmed
Mokoena’s intermediary Glyn Binkin confirmed that the player had already signed an agreement with Sundowns and it was now a matter of the SuperSport agreeing to the reported R25 million that the Brazilians are thought to be ready to pay for the player.
Now according to the latest reports, it seems like the transfer is already a done deal, with an official announcement expected any time from today. That is because the report claims that Mokoena trained as a SuperSport player for the last time on Tuesday, where he would’ve said his goodbyes ahead of a switch to the other side of Tshwane to Sundowns. SuperSport are also thought to be on the verge of losing another key midfielder and academy product in Mbule. The 23-year-old is thought to be close to finalising his transfer to Chiefs.
