2 min read

A home invasion in the Clare Hill Estates area of Durban has left a man in critical condition after he was shot in the head by a group of armed suspects.

His partner sustained minor injuries but her desperate pleas for help over a WhatsApp voice note have been widely circulated, with the mother audibly distressed that her infant child was downstairs in grave danger.

Clare Hill home invasion leaves husband in critical condition

Garrith Jamieson of KZN VIP paramedics confirmed to The South African that the man had been severely injured during the incident and remains in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

“This morning just after 11:15, paramedics were called to an apparent home invasion on Bolton Road in the Clare Hills area of Durban. Paramedics found a male, believed to be in his early 30s, had sustained a gunshot wound to his head,” he said.

“He was in a critical condition and stabilised by KZN VIP paramedics before being rushed through to a nearby hospital for the urgent care that he required. A second person sustained minor injuries and was also treated on the scene.”

He said that the South African Police Service (SAPS) were on scene and had cordoned off the area. “The circumstances surrounding the shooting are not clear as of yet and SAPS are investigating further,” he said.

Distress call made by mother

A voice note sent out by the woman, who was hiding in the bathroom, demonstrated her utter terror as the men

“Please come quickly,” she said tearfully. “I’m hiding in the bathroom. Someone come please. I got my small baby downstairs. Please come quickly, they got three guns.”

Kyle van Reenen of private security firm dRK Tactical, said emergency services were activated after a call was received for assistance in the area.

“A number of armed suspects had forced entry into a family home, holding them up at gunpoint,” he said.

“A tussle ensued and a male homeowner sustained a gunshot wound to the head. The suspects then fled the scene on foot, hijacking a Suzuki Swift parked in the roadway nearby,” he said.

Suspects at large

Van Reenen said that the suspects’ vehicle was found abandoned off a gravel road adjacent to the Umgeni River.

“The suspects remain at large,” said Van Reenen.

The South African has reached out to SAPS for further comment on the pursuit of those responsible for the harrowing incident and will update this story when it is forthcoming.
