Holy Stars clinch Apinto Cup after dramatic penalty shootout victory over Medeama
Basake Holy Stars edged out Medeama SC 5-4 on penalties to claim the Apinto Cup after an intense match ended 1-1 in regulation time at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa on Saturday.The game saw Francis Oteng give Basake Holy Stars an early lead in the first half, but Medeamas Diawise Taylor levelled the score in the second half, setting the stage for a nail-biting penalty shootout.Medeama controlled much of the possession throughout the match, but Basake Holy Stars showed resilience and determination, ultimately emerging victorious in the penalty shootout.The first eight penalties were successfully converted, but Medeamas winger Derrick Fordjour missed his crucial spot-kick, striking the post and handing the win to Basake Holy Stars.The match served as a curtain-raiser for the upcoming Champion of Champions clash between FC Samartex 1996 and Nsoatreman FC, scheduled to kick off later that evening at 6:00 PM local time. This match will mark the start of the new football season, with the league champions facing off against the FA Cup holders in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.The trophy was presented to Basake Holy Stars by the Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem and Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. George Mireku Duker, who was joined by GFA Executive Council members Samuel Aboabire and Eugene Noel Nobel.GFA Vice-President Mark Addo, Black Stars coach Otto Addo, and his coaching staff, including assistant coach John Painstil and goalkeepers’ trainer Fatau Dauda, were also in attendance to witness the event.
