Hoerskool Jan Viljoen: Independent team to probe racism claims

The School Governing Body (SGB) at Hoërskool Jan Viljoen in Randfontein, west of Johannesburg, has appointed an independent team to investigate allegations of racism at the school.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the school for a parents’ meeting, which was rescheduled after it didn’t proceed on Thursday due to rain.  Even then, the sitting descended into a screaming match between match between both black and white parents. He updated parents on their grievances on Sunday, 20 February 2022.

The school found itself at the centre of a racial storm, stemming from a violent altercation between black and white pupils. It isn’t exactly clear what led to the fight but reports say a group of black pupils in Grade 8 were confronted by white learners who uttered the k-word.

‘THE SGB ISN’T GOING TO INVESTIGATE THEMSELVES’ – PANYAZA LESUFI

Hoërskool Jan Viljoen’s SGB chair Gustav Botha says they realised that they needed to appoint an independent team to establish what really transpired at the school.

Botha says the probe is to ensure a diligent and due process to ensure transparency and to make sure that no party will be prejudiced.

In addition, Lesufi announced there would be certain measures aimed at addressing the lack of diversity at Hoerskool Jan Viljoen. The province’s MEC for Social Development has been roped in to help the school.

“As part of their process, they took these learners to camp to embrace the moto, Unity through Diversity, and they accept that the incidents that took place here tested them; they tested their belief to a truly non-racial school and where they are, they are requesting the department, together with the district to give them support, give them guidance in ensuring that their school becomes an exemplary school.”

“The SGB is not going to investigate themselves. The district is not going to investigate themselves. I have appointed and I’m happy that the SAHRC has agreed to investigate everyone from Rocco to Roccomama or whoever in this particular school.”
