Hoërskool Elspark: Pupil stabbed during violent school fight
Hoërskool Elspark in Germiston recently became the scene of violence as a horrific fight between multiple learners broke out on Monday 16 November. The Gauteng Education Department has since released a statement saying that MEC Panyaza Lesufi would visit the school on Tuesday to get to the bottom of the incident.
WHAT CAN BE SEEN IN THE HOËRSKOOL ELSPARK VIDEO?
While the Hoërskool Elspark video will not be published for the safety and protection of pupils, horrific scenes did play out. In just 30 seconds, multiple pupils can be seen fighting each other in different groups across what appears to be a field. Some pupils can also be heard screaming in the background and running around frantically.
Others can be seen throwing fellow learners to the ground. Suddenly, a group of pupils back away from a certain area revealing a sharp knife on the ground. The video ends there.
As revealed by the Gauteng Education Department, the knife was not there for nothing. Lesufi, in a statement, confirmed that one pupil had been stabbed. He also said it is not yet clear what sparked the fight.
The video has since been shared multiple times on social media.
LESUFI TO VISIT SCHOOL REGARDING VIOLENCE
The education department said Lesufi is highly disturbed by the video footage.
“Allegedly today, 16 November 2020 learners of Hoerskool Elspark were involved in a fight captured on video footage, unfortunately, a learner was stabbed during this incident,” the department said.
“We are not sure what might have sparked the fight, however, this is strongly condemned. Necessary investigation and swift action against all perpetrators is required,” it added.
A woman took to Twitter on Monday claiming it was her younger brother who was stabbed at Hoërskool Elspark.
“My [little brother] was stabbed a number of times by fellow white learners at Hoërskool Elspark this morning. The school had the nerve to call the parent to come to school tomorrow morning because my brother is a witness to something big that happened at the school…”
“The young man is currently in hospital with chopped tendons and they said nothing about that. I am haunted by the thought that last night could have been the last time I was seeing my little [brother] alive,” she added.
“We’ll appreciate your intervention MEC. My brother has mentioned the racism that prevails at the school and we took it lightly. Sad part is that the white lady at reception turn[ed] him away when he went there for help, with his finger in two pieces, as she was attending to the white boys,” she added.
On Tuesday morning, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Ekurhuleni Region announced that they would visit the school.
“We are headed to Hoërskool Elspark this morning after a group of young white scholars attacked and stabbed a black boy in what is evidently a deep case of racist behaviour. We must never allow racism to find comfort in our society,” it said.
