‘He lied’: Christopher Logan to pay R1,25m over fake racist pub claim
Christopher Logan – the man who accused the owners of Hank’s Olde Irish pub in Cape Town of being “racist” – will have to fork out R1,25 million over a defamation ruling.
The young man – allegedly believed to be an “aspiring politician” – and his friend Thabiso Danca made headlines in 2022 over a viral video.
In it, Logan claimed his friend was denied entry into the pub based on his race.
HANK’S OLDE IRISH PUB WINS R125M LAWSUIT
According to media reports, the owners of Hank’s Olde Irish Pub – located in Cape Town’s Bree Street – were awarded R1,25 million in a defamation settlement.
The ruling was made by the Western Cape High Court in favour of pub co-owners, brothers Viron and John Papadakis, against Christopher Logan, whose video in the establishment went viral.
Logan – alleged to have political aspirations – will have to pay R500 000 to each brother for their loss of income. He will also have to fork out R250 000 in general damages.
The judgement read: “The plaintiffs experienced reputational harm, financial losses, emotional distress, and temporary business closures. They testified about the significant personal and professional impacts, including lost partnerships and emotional toll from public scrutiny.”
On 1 December 2022, Christopher Logan alleged that his friend Thabiso Danca had been denied entry into the Cape Town hotspot on the premise of the latter’s race.
The clip saw Logan angrily confront the owner of the pub, with a physical scuffle ensuing between both parties. He later posted bloodied images of his face and claimed that he had been assaulted.
Logan then conducted several media interviews and threatened to lay a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission.
His allegations saw the political party, the EFF, take protest action against the pub, which was forced to close its doors temporarily.
The allegations also riled up racial tensions among South Africans.
‘HE LIED’
Speaking to Mail & Guardian last year, co-owner John Papadakis claimed that police had concluded that the viral video had been “fabricated by individuals seeking to exploit a situation for personal gain.”
According to Papadakis, police claimed that instead of racial discrimination, Thabo Danca had been denied entry into the establishment after he failed to produce a valid ID.
At the time, Papadakis was in the process of civil and criminal charges against Christopher Logan.
On social media, South Africans have called out Logan for being a “liar” and “fraud.”
The DA’s Tami Jackson also joined in. She tweeted: “I have had the rather unfortunate opportunity to interact and work with this character Christopher Logan. I’ve never met a more sociopathic, deceitful, racist, narcissistic individual in my life.
WHERE IS CHRISTOPHER LOGAN?
Christopher Logan – who was last active on his X account in May – has yet to publicly respond to the judgement of his defamation lawsuit.
According to one X user, he is “hiding in the US,” although that could not be verified.
