GUSA Games: President Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko calls for further investments in UCC facilities
The President of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA), Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, has called for increased investment in sports facilities as the University of Cape Coast (UCC) prepares to host the 28th edition of the GUSA Games.Tanko emphasised that the GUSA Games play a vital role in developing athletes who often rise to national prominence and serve as role models for future generations.The official launch of the 28th GUSA Games took place at UCC, where the competitions mascot and logo were also unveiled. In his address, Tanko commended UCC for its unwavering commitment to hosting this years event and highlighted the exceptional sporting facilities available at the university.A special commendation must go to the University of Cape Coast for your unwavering commitment to hosting and the exceptional sporting facilities you provide. This is a testament to your dedication to student sports, he stated.Tanko acknowledged UCC’s understanding of the importance of creating an environment where athletes can excel and be inspired. However, he also noted that there is still room for growth.I encourage further investments in these facilities, enhancing, refining, and updating wherever necessary to meet the highest standards of athletic excellence. Remember, these facilities are more than just grounds for competition; they are breeding grounds for ambitions and natural athletes who can become national icons and champions, he added.Themed “Repositioning University Sports for National Development,” this year’s GUSA Games will take place from January 5 to January 18, 2025.The last edition was hosted by Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) emerged as champions, winning 22 gold, 22 silver, and 17 bronze medals.As anticipation builds for this year’s games, Tanko’s remarks underscore the importance of investing in sports infrastructure to foster talent development within Ghana’s educational institutions.
