Government has started registering Bodabodas as a way of streamlining and regulating the sector.
Last month Bodaboda riders under their newly formed the Bodaboda Riders Association met, the Inter Ministerial Committee composed of Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Security, Ministry of Works and Transport, The Uganda Police Force and agreed on key areas that will help in regulating the sector and weed out criminals.
Among them was registering Bodabodas riders, giving them uniform reflector jackets among others
Speaking to journalists at the Media Centre yesterday, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, the Minister of State for KCCA and Metropolitan Affairs said that some of the key issues like Registration have commenced.
“Registration of bodabodas has commenced as part of the recommendations and this shall be spearheaded by the RCC guided by Town Clerks, Division Heads and DISOS,” he said
The exercise, he said will look at different issues including; gazetting stages which shall be done by KCCA, Municipalities, Districts, Sub counties and the Division leadership, Identification of a rider, where a rider will be required to have a National Identification Number in order to be registered and Establishing leadership committees at every boda boda stage.
Others will be; registration of motorcycles (Bodaboda) which will have a special marking, uniforms (reflector jackets) for riders with registration details using QR-Code.
“These will be identified by their area of operations,” he said
Kyofatogabye said that the training for Boda-Boda riders in conjunction with the Ministry of Works and Transport shall be carried out and there after riders will be issued with permits on completion.
“The Ministry of Works and Transport is in the process. negotiating the permit fees with Uganda Driver Licensing System under the Uganda Security Printing Company (USPC) and other relevant authorities. The bodabodas shall be guided on how to pay for the User fees,” he said.
Kyofatogabye said that only Boda-Boda operators that have been registered will be allowed to operate in the city.
“As a Ministry of Kampala Capital City, we embarked on implementing the resolutions of the Inter Ministerial Committee and the National Security Council,” he said adding,
“As you recall, KCCA decongested the city by removing the street vendors and relocated them to gazetted market areas of operation. This considerably freed the streets of unwanted chaos and disorganization that was associated with street vending,”
The Ministry, he said continues to support efforts to decongest the city by reducing on the traffic jam in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area through upgrade of feeder roads to bitumen standard, repairing of major roads, signalizing of junctions under the Urban Road Rehabilitation Project and ensuring smooth operations of the taxi parks with gazetted stages which has created a conducive environment for motorists.
