Gov’t Calls for Focus on Male Victims of Gender Based Violence

In the wake of recent reports of increasing Sexual, Domestic and Gender Based violence cases during the Covid19 lockdown period, Government has asked civil society organizations and other key players in the humanitarian sector to start focus more on men who are suffering silently.

While officiating the opening of the Regional Training of Trainers for Professionals on how to combat Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in the Great Lakes Region held in Kampala, Ambassador Paul Mukumbya, a representative of Ambassador Patrick Mugoya the permanent secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that men fear reporting cases of violence to Police in fear of being embarrassed.

“Many think that its only women but men are greatly affected; there is a need to put in place measures of rehabilitating male victims of Sexual Gender Based Violence   who have been ignored for long,” he said.

Mukumbya said the Ugandan government was ready to provide more support towards promotion of awareness in community on prevention of gender based violence.

On his part, Victor Mugaruka, the Regional Director of the Regional Training Facility revealed that during their stay in the country they have already educated key players in the JLOS Sector like Judiciary and Police; and plan to reach out to other groups like journalists and soldiers on how to handle SGBV matters.

“A safer family without any gender based violence case is a key factor in promotion of peace in all countries. After Uganda we shall move to other countries like Rwanda and DRC.”
