GM Sugar Ltd employees detained for alleged robbery of UGX 95M

Kamuli, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Five employees of GM Sugar Ltd are in custody at Kamuli central police station for the alleged robbery of Shillings 95 Million from the cashier, Kobil Goswami on 26th November 2022. The suspects are Moses Kirya, Alex Waibale, Malicana Kirya, Adam Baliruno and Painedo Ojole.

The suspects are said to have connived with unidentified assailants to attack Goswami at his residence in Luzinga zone 1, Wankole sub-county in Kamuli district. The assailants shot Goswami in the left shoulder and gained access into his house where they robbed the money, which had been wrapped in a black bag, and fled to an unidentified destination.

Goswami was rushed to Nile International hospital in Jinja city where he is recuperating. Police picked up the suspects for deserting the crime scene and declining to cooperate with investigating officers, which raised suspicion. However, the suspects claim that they were equally rounded up by the assailants while filling returns at the weigh bridge’s operational office adjacent to Goswami’s house.

They claim that the armed assailants threatened them and later forced them to lead them to Goswami’s residence where they shot their victim, robbed the money, and sped off on a numberless motorcycle. The Busoga North police spokesperson, Michael Kasadha says that inquiries are still ongoing and they are liaising with sister security agencies to quickly track down the prime suspects.
