Ghana Highways Authority to begin repair works on Kojo Ashong, Afienya steel bridges

The Ministry of Roads and Highways through the Ghana Highways Authority, has announced the imminent commencement of repair works on two key bridges in the Greater Accra Region – the Kojo Ashong and the Afienya Steel Bridge.

These bridges have been a cause for concern due to their deteriorating condition, leading to significant traffic congestion and posing a safety risk to both motorists and pedestrians. The upcoming repair works form part of a larger infrastructure improvement plan, which aims to enhance road safety and improve traffic flow in the region.

A video announcement from the Ghana Highways Authority, sighted by Citi News on Saturday, July 6, emphasised the importance of these repair works for the safety and longevity of the two bridges.

The announcement also included specific details about the closure of the bridges. The Kojo Ashong bridge is scheduled to be closed to traffic at midnight on July 6, 2024, while the Afienya steel bridge will follow suit, closing to traffic at midnight on Monday, July 15, 2024.

The Authority has estimated that the repair works on both bridges will be completed within a two-week timeframe.

In the announcement, the Authority expressed its commitment to resolving the situation as quickly as possible, with its engineers and technical team poised to work diligently on the project.

The Authority urged the public to cooperate and exercise patience during this period, as these works are crucial for ensuring safety and restoring normal traffic flow.

“These repair works are crucial for maintaining the safety and longevity of the two bridges. The Kojo Ashong bridge will be closed to traffic on July 6, 2024, at midnight. The Afienya steel bridge will also be closed to traffic on Monday, July 15, 2024, at midnight. Both repair works will last for two weeks.”
