The Other Radio, an independent community-based online radio station in Cape Town, launched its new physical studio space in the heart of the city on Thursday, 16 September, along with a new website.
THE OTHER RADIO NOW HAS A PHYSICAL SPACE
The Other Radio describes itself as a collaborative and diverse radio platform that seeks to push South African cultural and musical initiatives within the country and beyond. “We tune you in to a growing list of shows, mixes and fixes from artists, DJs and hosts around the globe,” reads the website. “Keen ears, diverse sounds and whatever can be loosely defined as ‘other’.”
Prior to Thursday’s launch, which is being broadcasted live via the website, the online radio station functioned remotely. The new set-up will allow the station to broadcast live and also dig into its rich archive of previously recorded sets and shows.
One of the station’s co-founders, Aaron P, told British music publication Resident Advisor that the station plans to host DJ lessons and other community-based projects because of the high cost and inaccessibility of audio equipment and other barriers of entry in South Africa.
The station has more than 70 hosts and regular guest artists include Stiff Pap, Surreal Sessions, River Moon, Lakei, and the founders – Aaron P and Phijos – and many more.
