Former Kaizer Chiefs outcast reflects on his tough time at Naturena

Former Kaizer Chiefs outcast Sibusiso Mabiliso has faced significant challenges since joining the club as a free agent in July 2021. Although Mabiliso described the move to Amakhosi as a dream come true, he only made six appearances, but failed to secure a starting position.

When asked about his limited playing time, Mabiliso expressed gratitude for the opportunity but highlighted the impact of not receiving enough game time. “It was a dream move and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” said Mabiliso in an interview with iDiski Times digital paper

“I wouldn’t blame anyone for not getting game-time, but if I was given game-time, maybe I would have done much better,” he explained. He believes that with more opportunities, he could have established himself more effectively within the team.

Mabiliso: Control out of his hands

Mabiliso firmly stated, “I say it was out of my hands because if I was given enough opportunity, I would have done something different. So it was out of my hands. It’s something that I cannot control because I wasn’t given enough game time.” 

His words underscore the frustration many players feel when they lack the chance to showcase their abilities.

Mabiliso expressed a longing to have worked under coach Cavin Johnson during his time at Chiefs, noting that Johnson understands his playing style. “Yes, sometimes I wish I had worked with him at Chiefs because he is the person who understands me. And his philosophy also suits the style of my play,” he shared.

A longstanding relationship with Johnson

The fullback and centre-back reflected on his close relationship with Johnson, whom he has known for nearly 12 years. He commented on the tough situation Johnson was in as the coach of Chiefs,who were struggling. 

“Yes, I’ve always said, I really did [feel for him]. Since he’s the person that I was close to and as a person I knew for a very long time. I worked with him when I was 12 years old. And he’s the person who gave me my PSL debut,” Mabiliso stated. 

His sentiments reveal a deep appreciation for Johnson’s influence on his career and development as a player.
