Filth, staff negligence in state hospitals dent on Gov Eno’s govt – Akwa Ibom Assembly

UYO – MEMBER representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Otobong Effiong Bob says the unkempt appeal of the state-owned hospitals and negligence among health staff is painting Governor Umo Eno’s administration in a bad light.
Bob was expressing his disappointment on the state of Akwa Ibom public health institutions during the 11 September plenary of the State Assembly in response to a matter of urgent public importance brought to the floor of the House by Member Representing Mbo State Constituency, Effiong Johnson.
Johnson, Chief Whip of the House, had informed his fellow lawmakers of the sorry state he found the General Hospital at Awa Iman, Onna Local Government Area, during his recent visit for medical attention.
Sharing their personal experience, the lawmaker said no medical superintendent was found at his duty post by 10 am when he arrived at the secondary health facility, recalling the “huge investment the State Government has made on procurement of sophisticated equipment and infrastructure for the health facility.”
He said, “The Governor cannot be responsible for everything. There are people saddled with various responsibilities at different strata of government. If public servants with various responsibilities fail at their places of duty, it makes the government look bad.”
Going forward, the lawmaker said,
“Public Servants and heads of various government agencies should take their jobs seriously or be shown the way out for people who are ready to work. We have a lot of people in this state looking for jobs and who are willing to be dedicated to the service of the state.”
The House resolved that the State Commissioner for Health, Permanent Secretaries of both the Ministry of Health and the State Hospital Management Board and the Medical Superintendent, General Hospital Awa Iman, Onna appear before the Assembly at the next plenary of Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
