Pitso Mosimane and Al Ahly suffered heartbreak as they were denied a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup final by Palmeiras.
This was a semi-final clash between the two sides, and it was also a repeat of last season’s 3rd/4th play-off where Al Ahly won bronze.
AL AHLY TO FIGHT FOR FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP BRONZE AGAIN
On the night, Al Ahly welcomed a few of their players who took part in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final 48 hours ago.
And this was always going to be tough for Mosimane and his technical team as he needed his biggest stars for this clash against Palmeiras.
However, the Brazilian outfit proved too strong as they opened the scoring in 39th minute through Raphael Veiga.
The start of the second half saw Palmeiras double their lead through winger Dudu to put the game beyond Al Ahly’s reach.
Al Ahly had a penalty appeal and a goal turned down by VAR, and the two incidents surely demoralised Mosimane’s charges.
Ultimately, Al Ahly lost the match 2-0, and they will now wait for the loser between Chelsea and Al Hilal in the other semi-final.
