FDC Delegates Oust Nandala, Amuriat As Party Wrangles Escalate
By Nickson Maberi
A section of delegates of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) have ousted their party president, Patrick Amuriat, Secretary General Nandala Mafabi, and national treasurer, Geoffrey Ekanya.
These were ousted during a heavily guarded delegates conference held on September 19, 2023, at the offices of former party leader Dr. Kizza Besigye at Katonga Road in Kampala. The conference was called for by party chairman Wasswa Birigwa following the divisions in the FDC.
Patrick Amuriat has been replaced by Lord Mayor Eria Lukwago; Nandala Mafabi has been succeeded by his deputy Harold Kaija; and Francis Mwijuka will serve as the interim national treasurer.
The FDC delegates conference was shifted to Besigye’s offices on Katonga Road after delegates were blocked from accessing Nature Greens Beach Resort Busaabala, where it had initially been scheduled to take place.
Police blocked the conference at Busaabala because Wasswa Birigwa had not been granted permission to hold the delegates conference following complaints from Nandala Mafabi that he did not know about the conference.
The wrangles at FDC began when Nandala Mafabi and party president Patrick Amuriat failed to account for and reveal the source of a fund of about Shs 7 billion they had received. They argued that they would not disclose their source of funds for security reasons.
The in-house rot in FDC became a public secret when the fraction led by Ssemujju Nganda and Eria Lukwago exposed their colleagues Amuriat and Nandala Mafabi at a press conference held at Sharing Hall Nsambya in July this year.
