EU Provides US Million Grant For Solar Energy Supply in  Three Counties

The International Community is championing robust strides in buttressing the government of Liberia efforts in implementing sustainable projects within the Southeastern region.

As part of the international community initiatives, the European Union has provided Forty-Five Million United States Dollars grant for the supply of Sola energy in at least three counties in Liberia.

Counties to benefit from the European Union support project are Grand Bassa, Grand Kru, Sinoe positively affecting each provincial city.

Speaking to reporters in Barclayville recently, the European Union head of corporation, Jeroen Witkamp said it is priority project for the EU to support sustainable energy supplies that will provide electricity for more than thousands of households in those counties’ capital.

The European Union Representative asserted that when the project is fully implemented that will further lead to economic growth and Wil relive the citizens from the decades of the lack of electricity. 

Witkamp indicated that the technical details have been completed with the government to commence the installation works to erect the hydro solar panels.

He added that the project is a two years initiative and will be handover to the government of Liberia for the maintenance of the project in each county and will also provide affordable access to energy for homes and businesses.

The Ministry of Finance and the European Union delegations visit to Grand Kru was intended to conduct survey to identify suitable site for the hydro solar panels in Barclayville City.

For his part, the Ministry of Finance Program Officer for Infrastructure Development, said the project will be implemented by the ComStar Corporated in Barclayville City. He said the company’s will be responsible for the construction of the solar panels plant and the installation of the distribution network.

Monny Sogbie said the initiative is part of the eleven EDF project and is being sponsored by the European Union delegation to Liberia.

 “The Rural Renewable Energy Agency Will be the beneficiary of the asset that will be built and the National Authorizing Office which is under the Ministry of Finance, Development Planning is the contracting authority which is in charge of the EDF funds donor, he said.

Sogbie added that the project which commenced on November 22,2024 is part of the government Arrest Agenda in bettering the live of citizens and enhancing economic empowerment.  He urged the citizens and local stakeholders to fully collabrate with the contractors for the successful implementation of the project. He pointed out that the first phase of the project covers survey and detailed design work.

The Ministry of Finance Representative on behalf of the Government of Liberia expressed gratitude to the European Union Liberia Office for its continued support in accelerating development, particularly in the energy sector.  He then pledged the government’s commitment in sustaining the project upon its completion and official turnover.

Meanwhile, 700 street lights are expected to be installed in Buchanan and Greenville with a 33kV distribution system in Buchanan, 850kW solar power plant and 2MW Mini Hydro Power Plant in Greenville, and 200kWp Solar PV Plant in Barclayville, including two  Diesel Generators (850kVA and 225kV).
