Ernest Thompson claims government interference in Black Stars coaching appointments
Otto AddoFormer Black Stars management committee member, Ernest Thompson, has alleged that government influence sometimes plays a role in the appointment of coaches for the national team.Thompson revealed that there have been instances when pressure from government officials led to the selection of coaches considered unsuitable for the role.”At times, theres pressure from above regarding who should be appointed as coach. This hasnt only happened under this administration; it also occurred during ET Mensahs time. I confronted ET when Mariano Barreto was hired and asked why. He told me, Im not trying to interfere with your work as the FA, but Im intervening as the Sports Minister,” Thompson explained on JoySports.Thompson also recounted a conversation with Black Stars players who raised concerns about the suitability of a coach ahead of a World Cup tournament.”Before one of the World Cups, during a send-off at the State House, some players came to us and asked if we were sure about the coach leading the team,” he added.Ghanas failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has led to criticism, and the fate of Black Stars coach Otto Addo will be decided by the GFA this week.
