Erias Lukwago Suspends Campaigns over Amuriat, Bobi Wine Arrests
Erias Lukwago has suspended his campaigns for Kampala Mayor due to the arrest of presidential candidates Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and Eng Patrick Oboi Amuriat, Chimp Corps report.
While Kyagulanyi remains in detention at Nalufenya Police station in Jinja, Amuriat was released on Wednesday evening.
“I have been constrained to suspend my campaigns due to the brutal and illegal arrest of the Presidential Candidates,” said Lukwago on Thursday afternoon.
Lukwago joins Mugisha Muntu and Henry Tumukunde who have since postponed their presidential campaigns over the arrest of Muntu and Amuriat.
The Lord Mayor also decried the heavy deployment all over Kampala City and in several other districts.
He challenged Justice Simon Byabakama to own up this campaign and election exercise without taking sides.
He called on the friendly forces of change to further meditate and agree on one front for cause regime change.
Calm has been restored to most parts of Kampala after last evening’s sporadic riots that swept through Uganda’s capital city and other parts of the country, following the presidential candidates’ arrest.
However, some Kampala suburbs especially Kawempe and Bwaise remain on the edge as rioters continue to light fires in the middle of the roads.
Police fired water cannon, bullets and tear gas at brick-throwing protesters in some of the most widespread and violent clashes in more than five years.
Running battles in different parts of the country especially Jinja, Mukono, Gulu and Lira followed weeks of growing tensions between the opposition and government over the conduct of campaigns which police say will increase the spread of Coronavirus.
