ECOWAS Clears Cheddar Spokesperson

Shalima Abusi

In a landmark ruling, the ECOWAS Court has declared the rearrest and detention of Shalima Abusi, spokesperson for the New Force Movement, as unlawful and a violation of her liberty.

The court also awarded Abusi a compensation of $10,000 (GHC160,000.00).

The ruling is a significant victory for Abusi, who was rearrested and detained on December 19, 2023, and eventually deported.

The ECOWAS Court found that Abusi’s rearrest and detention violated Article 6 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Lawyer Sosu, who represented Abusi in court, expressed his gratitude to the ECOWAS Court for protecting Abusi’s rights.

“I feel vindicated that the ECOWAS Court has protected the right of Shalimar,” Sosu said.
