Easy bread rolls – Release your inner baker

Baking your own easy bread rolls is much simpler than you can imagine. And nothing compares to the delicious aroma of fresh bread coming steaming with flavour from the oven. Bake these easy bread rolls once and you will never want to buy bread rolls from the supermarket again. Freshly baked rolls from your own kitchen are just so much better.

Whether you want to serve these easy bread rolls with hearty dishes like soups and stews or just as a quick snack, they will be a hit with the family. You can also use these rolls to make hamburgers or breakfast rolls.

Best served warm from the oven with a thick slather of soft butter melting into the softness of the bread. If any bread rolls remain after coming from the oven, you can keep them in an airtight container for up to three days.

Total time

450 grams all-purpose flour

7 ml salt

5 ml sugar

5 grams instant yeast

10 grams butter

250 ml lukewarm water

Preheat the oven to 200°C
In a mixing bowl combine flour, sugar and salt and add the instant yeast and stir with a whisk until combined.
Rub the butter into the flour and slowly add the water to form a soft dough. Knead well for approximately 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
Once all the ingredients have come together to form a dough, put your machine on high and allow to knead for 3-5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Put the dough in an oiled bowl and cover. Allow rising for 20 minutes.
Flour your work surface and knock the dough down. Portion into 16 equal parts and gently roll into round balls.
Place on an oiled baking sheet and oil the top of the rolls. Allow rising for another 40 minutes until they have doubled in size.
Brush the top of the rolls with egg and milk.
Bake rolls for 10 to 15 minutes until golden brown.

This is a guideline for mixing the dough by hand. If using a machine add all ingredients into your mixing bowl with the dough attachment and mix slowly until you see all the ingredients are combined. This prevents all the flour from making a mess. Once combined, it is safe to put it on high.
