A horrific road accident in the Eastern Cape has left at least eight people dead, authorities have confirmed.
The road crash occurred on Friday evening, 20 May 2022, on the N2 outside Makhanda. It is believed that an Opel Corsa Lite carrying six occupants collided with a Toyota Quantum with two males on board.
Seven were declared dead at the scene while one of the men died on arrival at hospital.
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport’s spokesperson Unathi Binqose said of the accident: “One reckless driver who has dragged an innocent driver in an accident that had nothing to do with him or her. Here today we are talking about eight people who were involved in an accident just outside Makhanda and unfortunately all those eight people who were involved in that crash have all perished.”
ANOTHER FATAL ROAD ACCIDENT IN THE EASTERN CAPE
Meanwhile, another vehicle accident occurred in the Eastern Cape just a day before, leaving at least four people dead. The crash was between a car and a bakkie on the N2 road between Makhanda and Peddie.
According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, all the occupants of the one car, two women, and a three-year-old child died, while a passenger from the bakkie was also declared dead at the scene.
“A Polo VW Vivo with three occupants, 2 females and a 3 year old boy, (All deceased) from Grahamstown while Toyota LDV with 6 occupants travelling from Peddie direction, all males alleged from local farm collided head on. All 3 from the Polo died including a passenger from the Bakkie perished on scene,” the department said.
