Currie Cup: Sanele Nohamba show steers Lions into final

Sanele Nohamba made a match-defining cameo to lift the Lions to a thrilling 43-34 win over the Cheetahs in their Currie Cup semi-final at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The result will see the Johannesburg-based side contest a Currie Cup final for the first time since 2019, when they came up and lost against the Cheetahs in the title-decider.

This time around, they’ll vie for the crown on home ground and will face either the Bulls or the Sharks, who will contest the second semi-final at Loftus Versfeld later today.

In a try-fest for the ages, these teams went blow for blow until deep into the final quarter before Nohamba came on and swung the pendulum in the hosts’ favour with a brilliant cameo.

With the Lions trailing 26-29, he first knocked over a penalty to level the scores before dancing through the heart of the Cheetahs defence for a self-converted try to give the home side what proved to be an unassailable lead. He also converted the Lions’ last try of the game to end his contribution on 12 points.
