CSOs decry EFCC’s response to Yahaya Bello corruption allegations
A coalition of 60 civil society organizations has expressed concerns over the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) handling of the alleged corruption case against former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
They criticized the EFCC’s decision to declare Bello wanted without first inviting him for questioning, calling it “melodrama, theatrics, and sheer unseriousness” in the fight against corruption.
The coalition’s convener, Oluwasegun Emmanuel, noted that the EFCC obtained an arrest warrant from Justice Emeka Nwite, who had previously ruled against the EFCC in a similar case. This move was seen as alarming, especially since Bello was not officially invited for questioning before being declared wanted.
In a surprising turn of events, Bello voluntarily presented himself to the EFCC for questioning on September 18, only to be asked to leave without being interrogated. Hours later, EFCC agents and unknown individuals allegedly invaded the Governor’s Lodge, firing live bullets in an attempt to arrest him. This incident has raised concerns about Bello’s safety and the EFCC’s motives.
The coalition has demanded transparency and accountability from the EFCC, questioning Bello’s current whereabouts.
