Corporate companies urged to support people with disabilities

Entebbe, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Rukia Nakadama Isanga, the third deputy prime minister and minister without portfolio, has called on corporate companies in Uganda to step up their support for people with disabilities.
She made this appeal on Sept.13 during a handover ceremony of wheelchairs for children with disabilities at the ongoing Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Conference organized by the Ministry of Gender, Labor, and Social Development at Imperial Resort Hotel, Entebbe.
The Minister commended Roofings Group for their generous donation of state-of-the-art wheelchairs and urged other corporate entities to follow suit.
“Roofings Group contribution brings hope and empowerment to children with disabilities,” Nakadama said.
She highlighted the importance of the CBR approach, which has been critical in raising awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding disability in Uganda.
“This approach continues to guide the development of programs that promote meaningful inclusion. The wheelchairs donated today are not just mobility aids; they are symbols of hope, giving children with disabilities the chance to dream of a brighter future,” she stated.
Stuart Jason Mwesigwa, Roofings Group’s Corporate Affairs Manager, reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting marginalized communities as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy.
“As a company deeply committed to corporate social responsibility, we take immense pride in contributing to Uganda’s economic growth. Our support for children today is about more than just empowering their dreams; it’s about shaping future leaders who will bring positive change to their communities,” Mwesigwa noted.
Mwesigwa also emphasized that the wheelchairs are a testament to Roofings’ dedication to the “Buy Uganda, Build Uganda” (BUBU) initiative. “These wheelchairs were produced in a workshop that Roofings supported in 2023, in partnership with Kyaninga Mobility. The workshop continues to produce sustainable, easy-to-repair wheelchairs made in Uganda, aligning with our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This donation specifically contributes to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 5: Gender Equality, and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities,” Mwesigwa explained.
