Captain to water boy: Siya Kolisi teases Eben Etzebeth [video]
Siya Kolisi took another dig at his Springboks and Sharks colleague and pal Eben Etzebeth, who was “demoted” from captain to water boy status in the game against the Stormers.
The duo are known for their banter on and off the pitch, including shady comments on social media.
The Durban club won 21-15 on home ground at the Kings Park Stadium in the nail-biting game. Eben was previously told to “freshen up” by Sharks coach John Plumtree after an intense Bok test series that wrapped up last week.
EBEN ETZEBETH’S ‘WATER BOY’ STATUS HAS RUGBY FANS AMUSED
Earlier this week, Sharks coach John Plumtree revealed that Eben Etzebeth would be sitting out the game against the Stormers.
He said of the highest-capped Bok: “I wasn’t happy with him playing [against the Stormers]. He looks a bit dented, to be honest. We need to freshen him up.”
He added: “His body is just a little bit broken.”
What Plumtree did not mention was that Eben Etzebeth – who has previously captained the squad – would be on “water boy” duty.
On his Instagram account, the 33-year-old posted pics of him serving his colleagues water.
He captioned the post: “Stress levels are definitely much higher on the sidelines than on the field.””
In the comments section, rugby fans were slightly amused at Eben’s new role.
@forbaakssake: “Best water boy Kings Park ever did see.”
@mother_city_time: “Most capped ‘water-boy’”
@liliabernado_81: “Is he supposed to quench the thirst or ignite it?”
SIYA KOLISI FIRES SHOTS
Also jumping in the comments section – as if on cue – was Siya Kolisi, who poked fun at Eben Etzebeth, who has previously captained both the Springboks and the Sharks.
Siya posted a meme that read, “Why are you yelling at me?” He added, “This was me every time you brought me a message.”
On his IG Stories, Siya also complained about Eben serving them “warm water.”
Siya and Eben – who have known each other since they were teenagers – are known for their bromance and banter.
When Eben was named captain in the Springboks game against Scotland, he used the opportunity to tease his bestie. “I’m the captain now”, he joked in the comments section under a post by Siya.
