Buganda Condemns Arrest of Presidential Candidates
The Katikiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga has condemned the brutal treatment of presidential candidates who have defied the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aimed at containing the spread of the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic.
In his statement released on Wednesday evening, Mayiga said that covid-19 is a real and a very serious pandemic but it does not mean that whoever doesn’t follow SOPs must be treated in a dehumanizing manner including tear gassing them and putting them under detention.
“We condemn the torture and mistreatment of presidential and parliamentary aspirants. Mistreating them must stop because such acts play a significant role in the destabilization of our country,” Mayiga said.
He called upon various Government organs not to abuse or violate human rights under the guise of enforcing covid-19 SOPs.
Mayiga, however, urged people to continue being careful and observe the Ministry of Health rules in a bit to mitigate the spread of the pandemic.
On Wednesday November 18, several towns were covered with protests in demand for the release of Hon Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu one of the presidential candidates who was arrested in Luuka District on allegations of flouting the Ministry of Health guidelines on covid-19 prevention.
