Brussels Airlines launches “Read to Succeed” Literacy program in Liberia: Together with Rosetta Steps Education Foundation, hundreds of young Liberians are enabled to read

Monrovia, Liberia –Brussels Airlines and help alliance -are proud to announce the grand launch of its “Read to Succeed” reading, phonics, and literacy program implemented by the Rosetta Steps Education Center. This groundbreaking initiative, aimed at empowering young learners in underserved communities, has been made possible through a generous grant from help alliance, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of Lufthansa Group.

The program has already achieved a significant milestone, with 128 participants successfully completing their training and receiving certificates. These participants were drawn from three key groups:

28 from Abedu Bentsi Public School
50 for the PUCC Community 20th Street Sinkor
50 from various schools within the Caldwell Road New Kru Town Community
The event was graced by esteemed guests, including the crew of Brussels Airlines, Lena Vaulont of help alliance, Brussels Airlines Country Manager Marjolein Six, and the USAID Country Director Mr. Jim Wright. The Chair of the Civil Aviation Authority was also in attendance, alongside Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO of Brussels Airlines, who extended her greetings and congratulations to the participants.

“Read to Succeed” is a structured literacy initiative aimed at improving reading proficiency in primary schools. This program assigns trained teachers to selected schools, where they work directly with students to enhance their phonics knowledge and reading abilities.

Key Program components of the program are a baseline assessment that is designed to identify students’ current understanding of letter-sound relationships, word recognition, and decoding skills. Introduction of 1,000 sight Words and the teaching of 17 Phonics Skills which are critical for reading success.

The Phonics Program spans 4 months, during which teachers provide consistent, targeted instruction to improve students’ reading abilities. By the end of the program, students ​ develop a stronger foundation in phonics, gain a broad vocabulary of 1,000 sight words, and enhanced their overall reading proficiency.
