Breaking: Kaizer Chiefs beat Sundowns to win Legends Cup
Kaizer Chiefs edged out Mamelodi Sundowns 5-4 on penalties to claim the Home of Legends Cup on Saturday evening at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium.
Amakhosi held their nerves in the end to claim a penalty shootout win after the final finished 0-0 after 90 minutes. The Soweto giants earlier defeated Golden Arrows 2-0 to set up a meeting with Masandawana. Goals from Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Mfundo Vilakazi were enough to give Kaizer Chiefs the win in the first semi-final.
Kaizer Chiefs finally beat Mamelodi Sundowns
Masanadwana, who were missing several key players, faced Chippa United in the second semi-final. Siyanda Msani opened the scoring for Sundowns, but Seun Ndlovu leveled for the Chilli Boys forcing a penalty shootout
Mamelodi Sundowns won 5-4 to set up a dream final against Kaizer Chiefs in the tournament. A win is a moral boost for Amakhosi after losing twice to The Brazilians this season. Having won the Cufa Cup tournament last month, Amakhosi have now claimed another trophy to their cabinet this season.
Although not official, a win over Mamelodi Sundowns always brings smiles to Kaizer Chiefs’ fans. During the tournament, Amakhosi missed head coach Nasreddine Nabi, who is recovering at home after recently undergoing a minor orthopedic operation.
The 58-year-old is expected to return in time to lead the team for their next league match, against Richards Bay in Polokwane on 27 November.
In Nabi’s absence, assistant coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze took charge of Kaizer Chiefs’ matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows on Saturday.
