Breaking: Boris Johnson Agrees to Resign As UK Prime Minister

Boris Johnson is reported to have agreed to step down as Prime Minister of the UK following mounting pressure from his party.

Mr Johnson has reportedly spoken to the Tory 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady and agreed to stand down, with a new Tory leader set to be in place by the party conference in October, a No 10 source said.

It comes after his newly appointed Education Secretary Michelle Donelan resigned after 36 hours in the post, Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi told the prime minister to “go now” and Defence Secretary Ben Wallace withdrew his support.

The development follows intense pressure from party colleagues, with dozens of resignations within government from cabinet level down.

Months of unremitting political turbulence spiked on Tuesday when the health secretary and chancellor quit within 10 minutes of each other over the PM’s handling of sexual misconduct allegations against a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP).

This triggered a trickle of resignations and letters of no confidence from junior ministers and MPs that on Wednesday became a flood.

That evening, a group of senior ministers went to Downing Street to try to persuade the PM to resign.
