Bobi Wine Granted Bail By Iganga Court Amid Caution on Campaign Guidelines
National Unity Platform Presidential Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) has been released on bail.
Bobi Wine was released on a non cash bail of Shs 1million while his two sureties were bonded at 5million shillings each
His sureties were fellow MPs John Baptist Nambeshe and Paul Mwiru.
Kyagulanyi appeared today at the Iganga Chief Magistrates Court amid tight security.
He had been detained at Nagalama Police in Jinja since Wednesday night.
At the court, he appeared in a blue polo T shirt, looking healthy and strong-minded.
The court was packed with several NUP supporters and reporters compelling the magistrate, Her Worship Catherine Agwero to halt the session for a few minutes and order the number to be reduced to 20.
In the hearing, Bobi Wine’s lawyers led by Lubega Segona, accused police of tearing Bobi Wine’s clothes and torturing him during custody.
The presidential candidate was then read the charges which he denied.
The state told court that Bobi Wine on Wednesday this week conducted an act likely to cause the spread of Covid19.
The Kyadondo East MP was arrested in Luuka for allegedly holding a mass rally against the guidelines of the electoral commission.
His lawyers then proceeded to file an application for their client to be released on bail, citing a number of grounds including the fact that he is a respected member of parliament and a presidential candidate in next year’s election.
The state on the other hand asked court to deny bail stating that Bobi Wine does not have a fixed place of abode in the Court’s jurisdiction and the fact that the charges against him are of great national importance
In her ruling, Magistrate Agwero said the accused had fulfilled all conditions to merit bail.
Caution
She however cautioned the presidential candidate to adhere to the campaign guidelines as he continues on his campaign trail.
“The accused being a presidential candidate must adhere to the campaign guidelines set by the Electoral Commission and the Standard Operating Procedures set by the Ministry of Health,” she ruled.
Among others, the magistrate said Bobi Wine must limit his campaign rallies to only 200 people.
“All people at the rally must wear masks property; the meeting venue must have facilities for hand washing, and people must maintain social distance. There must be no procession to or from the venue,” she added.
The case was adjourned to December 18th when it will return for mention.
