Beatrice Gomez: Praise for Miss Philippines’ top-five Miss Universe finish

Beatrice Luigi Gomez caught the world’s attention earlier this year when she was the first openly LGBTQI+ woman to be crowned Miss Philippines. Gomez stunned at the Miss Universe 2021 pageant on Sunday 12 December but only made it to the top five stages. She was applauded for her determination throughout the competition by several people including Philippines Vice-President Leni Robredo.

Beatrice Luigi Gomez was crowned Miss Philippines on 30 September 2021 making history as the first openly LGBTQI+ woman to win the crown. The 26-year-old model and athlete also won the Best in Swimsuit and Best in Evening Gown awards on the evening.

At the Miss Philippines pageant, Gomez highlighted that she was certain the southeast Asian country was ready to send a member of the LGBTQI+ community to the Miss Universe pageant.

As per GMA News, this is how she answered the question: “I honestly believe that our country had definitely been in a long way in battling our fight for equality for the LGBTQIA+ community. Our country has been very supportive and I definitely think we are definitely ready to send someone, an LGBTQIA+ member to the universe.”

The 70th annual Miss Universe pageant took place in Eilat, Israel on Sunday 12 December. The competition was fierce but only one woman could take home the Miss Universe crown.

Beatrice Gomez only made the top five stages of the pageant and Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned Miss Universe 2021. Miss Paraguay Nadia Ferreira was crowned first runner-up and South Africa’s Lalela Mswane was crowned the second runner-up.

Taking to Twitter she congratulated Harnaaz Sandhu on her new crown.

Congratulations Miss India!!! #70thMissuniverse
