Lyle Lakay opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick from outside the box but Richard Mbulu denied them victory deep into stoppage time.

The Sundowns technical team fielded their strongest possible starting line-up with the likes of Denis Onyango, Themba Zwane and Peter Shalulile all in the starting line-up.

Both Sundowns and Baroka had everything under control at the start of the game, but it was the visitors who nearly went ahead in the 20th minute.

Lakay beat Chipezeze with a low curler but his effort rattled the woodwork, much to the relief of the Baroka bench.

Baroka’s biggest break came soon afterwards as they were awarded a penalty after Rushine de Reuck was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box.

However, Baroka squandered that chance as Mashweu Mphahlele skied the resulting penalty, much to the disappointment of Kgoloko Thobejane.

Lakay again hit the woodwork closer to the break as his lobbed the ball over Chipezeze from the edge of the Baroka box.

Sundowns were forced into making a change on the stroke of half-time as Erwin Saavedra replaced the injured Pavol Safranko.

Sundowns started the second half on the front foot as Lakay curled a free-kick around the wall and past Chipezeze in the 49th minute to make it 1-0.

Lakay, named man of the match on the night, rattled the crossbar from a 66th-minute free-kick situation as he looked to complete his brace.

Sundowns were in control of the game as they dominated the possession, especially in midfield but couldn’t hurt Baroka.

They were duly punished for their lack of goalscoring chances deep into stoppage time as Mbulu beat Onyango with a superb goal to draw Baroka level.
