Baptism of fire: Only the Nedbank Cup left for Kaizer Chiefs after a 4-0 loss to Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns eliminated Kaizer Chiefs from the Carling Knockout Cup following a 4-0 comprehensive win at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.
Masandawana dominated the match in the early stages and were rewarded as early as the 14th minute. Lucas Ribeiro drew a foul inside the box which Iqraam Rayners converted. Eight minutes later, the striker found his second goal
A long ball from Allende found Khuliso Mudau on the right. The Bafana Bafana defender’s cross found Rayners, who committed two defenders before firing the ball in the back of the net.
in the 39th minute, Sundowns found their third after Kaizer Chiefs’ defence was found wanting. A cross from Aubrey Modiba found Peter Shalulile, who made no mistake.
In the second half, Sundowns sought to score a fourth goal and continued to pressure the Chiefs. Amakhosi’s captain, Inacio Miguel, received a second yellow card for a foul on Shalulile, forcing Chiefs to play with ten men for most of the half. Sundowns scored their fourth goal through Mudau in the 60th minute.
Sundowns claim another win against Kaizer Chiefs
A loss to Sundowns means Amakhosi will have to rely on the Nedbank Cup if they are to win silverware this season. In the league, Nasreddine Nabi’s men are already 11 points behind log leaders Orlando Pirates and look less likely to contend for the title. Chiefs have won just one of their last five matches in all competition.
Can Amakhosi and Nabi turn the corner?
