Banyana Banyana beat Super Falcons to lift Aisha Buhari Cup

Banyana Banyana are the 2021 Aisha Buhari Cup champions following their 4-2 win over the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the final on Tuesday.

Desiree Ellis’ charges took the lead soon after the start of the game as Alozie Chidi scored an own goal inside the opening five minutes.

Banyana Banyana were 2-0 up after 17 minutes following a penalty that was converted by Linda Motlhalo after Ebi Onome had handled the ball inside her own box.

The South Africans proved too strong for the Super Falcons as they made it 3-0 through Gabriel Salgado just before the interval.

The scoreline meant Nigeria needed a big second half performance if they were to stand any chance of winning on the day.

And the Super Falcons did just that as they pulled one back through Vivian Ikechukwu immediately after the break.

Ikechukwu completed her brace eight minutes into the second 45 minutes as the Super Falcons looked on track to taking the game away from Banyana Banyana.

Banyana Banyana, though, put in a solid performance in defence for the better part of the second half as they made it difficult for Nigeria to score.

And while they defended as a unit, Banyana Banyana still managed to push forward, and they were were rewarded with a penalty six minutes from time.

This was after Motlhalo was brought down inside the Super Falcons box, and the resulting penalty was converted by Mamello Makhabane.

Makhabane’s goal saw Banyana Banyana restore a two-goal cushion, and that proved to be the final goal of the match as Ellis’ ladies went on to lift the trophy.
