Amuriat Decries ‘Mishandling of Citizens’ as His Torrid Campaigns Continue in Greater Masaka

Forum for Democratic Change’s (FDC) Presidential Flag bearer, Patrick Oboi Amuriat has queried Government over the “continued crack down on its opponents” ahead of the 2021 Presidential elections.

He made these remarks during Christmas prayers at Kitovu Cathedral in Masaka city on Friday December 25, 2020.

Speaking yesterday, Amuriat, who has so far been arrested four times during the ongoing Presidential campaigns, told the congregation that he has resorted to prayers after being brutalized over and over again.

“Every morning that I wake up, I put a rosary around my neck and say a short prayer. And I say to God; if this must be my last day, so let it be, because there is a high risk in what we do. It looks like we actually made a mistake to even contest against the person who leads this country today,” he revealed.

Amuriat told the congregation that he was teargassed for no cause upon stepping foot in Greater Masaka on December 24, 2020.

“From the time I went to Lyantonde, there was a trail of tear gas everywhere we went. And I really sympathize with my brothers and sisters of NUP because it seems like it is the same harassment that we have to face all day long,” he pointed out.

Despite this hostility, Amuriat said, he will not give up the country to a band of people who have “mismanaged it and continue to mishandle citizens.”

“Let us combine our force, those who are deprived, those who are marginalized, please let us come together and make our country a better place,” he urged.

“My Lord Bishop, I want to appeal to you, our shepherds, to raise your voices against this injustices that we continue to face. Maybe your voices can be heard by authorities that continue to stick to power at whatever cost,” Amuriat stated further.

Taking cognizance of the appalling situation, Anthony Kakumba, the Vicar General, warned that if nothing is done to reverse the unbecoming political environment, Uganda could one day turn into a “laughing stock”.

The FDC candidate is expected to campaign in Sembabule, Bukomansimbi and Masaka district on today December 26, 2020.

The mass was also was celebrated by Florence Namayanja, the Masaka Woman Legislator, Mathias Mpuuga the incumbent Masaka Municipality Member of Parliament and Jude Mbabali the Masaka LC V among many others.
