Amidu’s replacement must probe Airbus scandal – NPP Communicator
A member of the National Communications Team of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, is urging whoever replaces Mr. Martin Amidu as the Special Prosecutor to continue the probe into the Airbus bribery scandal.
Mr. Aboagye insists that such an important issue cannot be left to go unresolved because the person who began the investigation is no longer in office.
According to him whoever replaces Amidu must pursue the Airbus scandal and ensure all who were involved in it are brought to book.
“In the same way that we (NPP) have accepted Mr. Amidu’s report on the Minerals Income Fund and sent it back to Parliament, we are expecting whoever will be appointed to replace Mr. Amidu to continue the pursuit of the Airbus scandal and ensure that Mr. Mahama, who has been identified as ‘Government Official One’ by the OSP is duly investigated and duly prosecuted.
Background
It would be recalled that Mr. Amidu, in his corruption risk assessment report on the Agyapa deal, updated Ghanaians on his investigation into the Airbus scandal, and stated that he was convinced of the former President’s involvement.
He also said he was holding on with the probe into Mr. Mahama’s alleged involvement in the infamous scandal till after the December 7 general elections.
About the Airbus scandal
On January 31, Ghana was cited as one of five countries in which global aerospace group, Airbus SE, allegedly bribed or promised payments to senior officials in exchange for business favours between 2009 and 2015, according to the UK’s Serious Fraud Office.
This led to a record £3 billion in settlement by Airbus with France, the United Kingdom and the United States to avoid corporate criminal charges.
In addition to Ghana, the company allegedly paid bribes to officials in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Taiwan within the same period.
The UK’s Serious Fraud Office, however, in its statement of fact did not name the individual Ghanaian officials nor the Airbus agents involved in the crime because investigations were still ongoing.
President Akufo-Addo had earlier referred the Airbus bribery scandal to the Office of the Special Prosecutor for investigations.
These investigations were expected to be conducted in collaboration with UK authorities, according to a statement from the Presidency.
