Agitators insist on NDDC forensic audit before board’s inauguration

By Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

A group of agitators, under the auspices of the 21st Century Youths of the Niger Delta and Agitators with Conscience (21st CYNDAC), have demanded that forensic audit of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) must be concluded first before the inauguration of the substantive board for the commission.

This position is contained in an electronic statement yesterday by the Coordinator of 21st CYNDAC, self-styled ‘General’ Ezon Ebi.

The group therefore urged the people of the Niger Delta to embrace every positive reform geared towards adding values and rejuvenating the NDDC for better service delivery to the region.

It reiterated that the forensic audit ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari must be satisfactorily carried out in order to set a good precedent for the incoming substantive NDDC board.

21st CYNDAC said the essence of establishing the NDDC was primarily to develop the region having suffered neglect and marginalisation for decades of being the only region whose natural resources make up 95 per cent of Nigeria’s national earnings.

The group regretted that after about 20 years of its establishment, the NDDC had not lived up to the expectations of the people, hence the order for forensic audit by President Buhari.

It said: “Since the commencement of the forensic audit by the Interim Management Committee of the commission, Nigerians have witnessed several accusations and counter-accusations peddled by detractors of good governance, some of whom are indigenes of the region who oftentimes mistake NDDC for their personal property.

“The mismanagement of the NDDC by previous administrations calls for stocktaking and revitalisation of the commission under the supervisory leadership of the Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio.”
