Aburi Girls’ Tutor receives AU Continental Teacher Award Prize for 2020

Mrs. Theodosia Larteley Oppong, a teacher at Aburi Girls’ Senior High School in Aburi – Akuapem in the Eastern Region, made Ghana proud by being one of the awardees of the 2nd edition of the AU continental Teacher Award Prize.

The AU continental Teacher Award was open to all African States. They were tasked to submit applications of two outstanding teachers at the secondary level; male and female.

They were further shortlisted to ten teachers then the top six were selected and awarded with certificates and 10,000dollars each.

The teachers have been awarded for their commitment to quality teaching, encouraging desirable behaviors among students, engaging in activities and networks that enhance the social and cultural value of learning and helping students achieve their long-term career goals by organizing engagement with relevant agencies.

The ceremony was organized on Monday, 21st Dec 2020 via webinar.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner for Human Resource Science and Technology; Her Excellency; Prof. Sarah Anyang Agbor, noted that the Teacher Prize is an important and valuable instrument that contributes to the success of Agenda 2063 and the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) to enhance visibility and status of the teacher in Africa at all levels from early childhood to tertiary levels including TVET, and promote teaching as a first choice profession.

The ceremony was hosted under the theme ‘Schools as development hubs to empower teachers after COVID-19”.

It was hosted by the AU Education Commission.

The AU Teacher Prize will raise the status of the teaching profession and the teacher, and inspire the best possible candidates to join the teaching profession, and further serve as a catalyst for similar programs at regional and national levels.
