2021 AFCON Qualifier: Sudan deny Ghana early ticket to join Senegal after defeat in Omdurman

Ghana failed to join Senegal as the second country to qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations following their 1-0 on Tuesday. The Black Stars were the bookies favourites to become the second nation to book a ticket to the continental football showpiece in Cameroon next year ahead of their trip to Omdurman to engage Sudan on Matchday 4 of the qualifying campaign. But it was the Secretary-birds who looked determined to secure victory as they dominated the Black Stars for the large part of the encounter.Coach Hubert Veluds side were duly rewarded for their tenacious display after Mohammed Abdul Rahman eluded the Ghana defense to nod home from close range in the 94th minute. The victory against the four-time African champions has thrown Group C wide open with two matches to end the qualifying campaign.Sudan now have six points, just three points behind leaders Ghana and South Africa after Matchday 4.Ghana could have secured an early ticket to next years tournament with a win but the loss to the Northeast Africa nation means coach Charles Akonnor and his charges have to pick at least four points from their remaining two games against South Africa and So Tom and Principe to realize their dream of making a 23rd appearance at the mundial. So far, it is only Senegal who have qualified for the competition after their 1-0 win against Guinea-Bissau on Sunday.Ghana will play as guests to South Africa before hosting So Tom and Principe at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium in the final qualifying match.
