Orlando Pirates legend defends Tito and Rele over showboating
Orlando Pirates legend Teboho Moloi has defended the flamboyant skills shown by the likes of Patrick Maswanganyi and Relebohile Mofokeng.
He said that showboating was not a problem as long as it’s done right and benefits the team. Showboating has divided opinions over the years in South African football. Others see it as a waste of time while some believe it adds something to SA football and heritage.
“If you are an Orlando Pirates supporter and you are not happy with what the boys are doing, then there’s something wrong with you,” Moloi told KickOff.com.
Orlando Pirates legend weighs in on showboating
“Let’s encourage the current generation to embrace this style even more. Instead of being overly critical, we should advise them on how and when to showcase their skills.
“Showboating is a derogatory term. This negativity stems from our people’s fear of Europeans. I, for one, am not afraid. I taught Arsenal how football is played in South Africa, and it took me to Turkey. The same so-called showboating allowed me to flourish there,” the Orlando Pirates legend added.
“You can’t separate Orlando Pirates from their style of play. Pirates and entertainment go hand-in-hand. It should be called ‘show-me-your-number’ instead of ‘showboating’.”
The Buccaneers have enjoyed a good start to the season, winning their first seven league games. Their first league defeat of the season came against Stellenbosch FC on Sunday. It remains to be seen if Orlando Pirates legend Teboho Mokoena will encourage showboating in the coming matches.
