Kenyan elected to head Codex Alimentarius Commission
Allan Azegele, Director of Veterinary Services in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, Kenya, has been elected by general consensus to serve as the 21th Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC).
Reacting to his victory, Azegele committed to serving Codex with inclusivity and transparency.
Acknowledging the achievements of the team he has been part of with his fellow Vice-Chairpersons Raj Rajasekar and Diego Varela, and Steve Wearne, the current Chairperson, Azegele outlined his goals for the future.
“Together we will build on Codex’s legacy as the global standard-bearer for food sasfety and food trade, whilst ensuring no one is left behind”, he said.
He noted his vision is to ensure that Codex remains the foundation of the global food system.
Jonathan Mueke, Principal Secretary, State Department for Livestock Development poured accolades on the newly elected Codex Alimentarius Commission’s Chairperson saying that he has consistently demonstrated exemplary professionalism and integrity throughout his career that has earned him respect from peers and international colleagues.
“This achievement Chair; underscores Kenya’s commitment to global food safety and quality standards. Kenya also endeavors to support seamless flow of food products through fair trade and this can only be achieved through Codex standards,” said PS Mueke.
PS Mueke assured the Codex team of Kenya’s unwavering support as they continue to address emerging challenges and enhance food security.
