Four Orlando Pirates stars set for European transfers
Orlando Pirates have a star-studded team.
From defence to attack, Thabiso Sesane to Relehobile Mofokeng, the Buccaneers have maestros all over the pitch, able to grab a game by the scruff of the neck and produce scintillating highlights – they aren’t top of the league for nothing.
Seven league wins in seven games – scoring thirteen and conceding two – showcases their clinical nature.
A historic run worthy of the title, this is Orlando Pirates’ best chance of glory since falling two points short in 2019; however, they have yet to endure South African soccer’s greatest test: a game against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Europe is watching
Such a streak – and talent – never goes unnoticed.
Mofokeng, Monnapule Saleng, Mohau Nkota and Patrick Maswangayi have each been tickling the interest of European clubs.
Belgium giants Standard Liege are monitoring Nkota and Saleng: “It’s Standard Liege that have shown interest. Actually, last season, they were also interested in Mohau Nkota while Monaco SC were interested in Saleng. So, now it is believed that the Standard Liege scouts are looking at Saleng since Nkota has not been playing much since his promotion”, the SoccerLaduma source concluded.
Regarding Maswangayi, “he was supposed to go back to Portugal after his stay at SuperSport United but instead he was signed by Orlando Pirates. Now, Oliveirense are once again interested in him. They were just giving him a chance to come back and grow as a person but things took a different turn. Since joining Pirates, they have been following his progress hence the inquiry on him now. They want him back,” an insider told SNL.
Arguably Orlando Pirates brightest star, Mofokeng, has also been luring interest abroad with Glasgow Rangers and RB Salzburg interested in the 20-year-old sensation.
Rumours of him leaving have been fueled by old coach and mentor, Mandla Qhogi, who believes now is his time make the move. “For me, it will be a good time for him to go overseas,” he explained to SoccerLaduma.
“It is the right time and there are things that he would learn if he were to move now at this stage of his career. The more we keep him this side it could mean that we are delaying him. He is 20, and I think it is the right time for him to move if he has to be sold overseas.”
