Petrol, diesel set for December price shake up: NEW COSTS REVEALED
There’s good and bad news for motorists – petrol prices are predicted to drop but diesel is expected to rise.
Both fuels have enjoyed significant price depletions after peaking at around R25 a litre earlier this year – from May, the cost of petrol and diesel fell for five months until November.
Early predictions suggest that only petrol will reignite its downward price trend, with forecasters projecting a 40-cent increase in diesel.
Via the South African website, Central Energy Fund (CEF) provided the numbers below:
FUEL | PRICE CHANGE |
Petrol 93 | decrease of 15 cents |
Petrol 95 | decrease of 4 cents |
Diesel 0.05% | increase of 40 cents |
Diesel 0.005% | increase of 39 cents |
Illuminating Paraffin | increase of 39 cents |
What does this mean for taxi fares?
As fuel prices soared from 2021 to early 2024, taxi fares followed a similar trajectory; however, as petrol and diesel become lighter on the pocket, they have yet to drop their rates, causing outrage among public transport goers.
Back in October, following the nationwide petrol price drop, National Taxi Alliance spokesman Theo Malele said: “We are still, however, nowhere near profitable margins as a business, and this is due to the non-subsidy of the taxi industry.
“As we step into the public transport month of October, we urge and encourage people to leave their vehicles and help promote public transport to offset the environmental degradation through our deposit of carbon emissions to help safeguard the future of human beings.”
In other words, don’t expect a reduction in taxi fares anytime soon.
