Cape Town announces 32-hour water outage in these areas

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will perform essential maintenance work in Hout Bay, resulting in temporary water outages. This initiative aims to enhance the reliability of the water supply system while addressing infrastructure concerns.

Details of the water outage

Water supply to areas bounded by Disa River Road and Park Avenue will be shut off from 9:00 on Wednesday, 20 November, until 17:00 on Thursday, 21 November. The planned maintenance includes installing an air valve and a fire hydrant and replacing defective isolation valves at the intersection of Bethal Street and Valley Road.

The water outage will affect Hout Bay Main Road, Riverside Terrace, and nearby streets such as Bethal Street, Welbevind Way, and Victorskloof Road. Tankers will be placed along the route to assist residents, and their locations will be shared beforehand.

Preparation and precautions for residents

Residents affected by the water outage are urged to prepare by storing sufficient water in clean, sealed containers. This ensures they have adequate supply during the disruption. Additionally, they should keep taps closed to prevent water wastage or potential damage when the supply resumes.

The city also advises that once the water supply is restored, some households may experience temporary discolouration or a milky appearance in their water due to trapped air. “This is normal,” the city reassured.

“Letting the water stand for a few minutes will clear the trapped air, restoring its clarity.”

Infrastructure upgrades: A Necessity for the Future

The Water and Sanitation Directorate’s maintenance forms part of a broader upgrade programme aimed at reducing unaccounted-for water and improving system efficiency. The City acknowledges the temporary inconvenience caused by the water outage but remains committed to providing long-term high-quality, uninterrupted water services.
